Hospitals looking to save money and reduce annual costs should use supply chain software to help audit their system and eliminate redundancies, according to Becker's Hospital Review.
The news source spoke to business development professional Chris Luoma, who said the first step healthcare facilities should take is to look at all aspects of their supply chain. While traditionally hospitals only used logistics software to track and manage high-cost elements, today's economic environment dictates that organizations use available tools to identify any and all aspects that could be causing them to lose money.
To help in the endeavor, Luoma said it is critically important to rely on data collection tools. While having supply chain experts on staff helps hospitals to better manage their supply chain and inventory, for most organizations it is not cost efficient to have multiple employees with high levels of expertise. Instead, healthcare providers should consider using supply chain software and other solutions that can aid in discovering any issues or potential cost saving shortcuts.
"You can't have experts in all different categories on the supply chain staff," Luoma said to the news source. "Look at different tools and networks you can leverage that let you be more efficient and smarter about how you approach contracting decisions and supply chain relationships."
When choosing which logistics software solution to use, Luoma said that hospitals need to consider more than just price. While cost is an important factor to take into account, healthcare providers should understand that variables such the program's ability to be incorporated into existing systems, IT maintenance issues and proper data management all should be looked at before one solution can be chosen.
According to Supply Chain Quarterly, organizations looking to better manage their supply chain should enter into a strategic partnership with their solutions provider. This way, the vendor can provide the best possible offerings to suit the organization's needs and the enterprise has the requisite tools to more effectively manage its supply chain and inventory.
