For businesses that have to rely on international shipments, using the highest quality logistics software is an absolute necessity to ensure operations can run as smoothly as possible, global logistics expert Doug Surrett wrote in an October 30 article for Logistics Viewpoints.
The United States is one of the world's biggest exporters, according to the World Trade Organization, but no U.S.-based company can expect to make money from its international shipments if the firm is not using the most accurate supply chain software available, Surrett wrote.
For example, companies have to consider various trade-related laws. Since logistics software can give a business more oversight concerning a product's location in the supply chain, the technology can help an organization to preemptively deal with any legal issues that may arise. In addition, Surrett wrote that solutions such as barcode tracking software can make it easier to follow shipments as they pass through multiple parties and locations.
"Managing the numerous activities related to execution in a single system enables you to minimize delays and measure carrier performance in the same system used for compliance and optimization," Surrett wrote.
When choosing a supply chain logistics solution, Surrett said, businesses should make sure they opt for products that can work seamlessly with other offerings used to ensure internal tracking stays consistent and accurate.
