Nucor Steel is a subsidiary of Nucor Corporation, the largest diversified steel and steel products manufacturer in the U.S., producing over 22-million tons of steel per year with a workforce of 25,000 employees. JFE Steel Corporation is the second largest steel manufacturer in Japan and among the top five in the world, employing over 60,000 people. It is owned by JFE Holdings.
Nucor needs to maintain high levels of operational efficiency to stay ahead of the competition. This includes using technology to reduce overhead costs associated with inventory handling and labor.
Nucor-JFE Steel Mexico is constructing a new greenfield manufacturing plant in Mexico from the ground up and chose an Oracle SCM Cloud implementation for their ERP. They wanted to supplement the ERP with modern, highly efficient automated inventory, maintenance and manufacturing processes using mobile barcoding technology. The solution would need to provide off-network support in the event of network downtime or server disruptions.
To maximize the success and robustness of Oracle’s solution offering for Nucor-JFE, Oracle Consulting partnered with the RFgen consulting team in a joint venture. The two teams blended Oracle Consulting’s deep understanding of the ERP’s backend processes with RFgen consulting’s 36-years of experience in warehouse mobilization. Together, the team successfully delivered the next gen Oracle SCM Cloud architecture supplemented with mobile data collection and barcoding technology.
The Oracle-RFgen total solution fulfilled all requirements of the Nucor-JFE plant, creating end-to-end process flows through digital process automation. Plant workers are armed with Android mobile devices to complete tasks at point-of-work that quickly communicate in Oracle SCM Cloud via RFgen’s streamline architecture without having to worry about latency between integrated systems.
With RFgen, Nucor-JFE gained:
- Real-Time Visibility: Automating data collection with RFgen mobile barcoding technology creates real-time transactional inventory visibility. RFgen pulls data from the Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP and updates the database as transactions occur live on the floor with response times equivalent to, or better than, on-premise validation.
- A Mobile Warehouse Workforce: Through a combination of hardware, software and two-way communication protocols, RFgen puts critical ERP data into the hands of employees throughout the plant, when and where they need it.
- 24/7 Data Collection: RFgen consultants recommended a high availability solution based on transactional data every 60 seconds to ensure workers can continuously collect data. This gives them 24/7 access to their ERP without interruption, even when connectivity is lost or limited.
“With this partnership, customers can leverage Oracle Consulting’s deep understanding of backend processes and RFgen’s expertise in data mobilization,” says RFgen’s Senior Oracle ERP Consultant. “Bring these two together and the customer gains the ability to process any Oracle transaction in real time at the point-of-work.“
